Sun Microsystems and Wingra Technologies To Increase Connectivity and Migration Options in Sun Internet Mail Server Software.

PALO ALTO, Calif. and MADISON, Wis.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 1998--Sun Microsystems and Wingra Technologies announced today an expanded agreement to add additional gateway, directory synchronization and migration technology to Sun's award-winning Sun(TM) Internet Mail Server(TM) software.

This latest relationship agreement will enable customers to seamlessly integrate Sun Internet Mail Server with Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, and Novell GroupWise messaging environments. It will also provide migration technology to move e-mail users to Sun Internet Mail Server software from a wide variety of messaging environments, including Microsoft Mail, Lotus cc:Mail, Novell GroupWise, Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange.

Gateways and directory synchronization are necessary components for different messaging systems to coexist seamlessly, and are the pathway an enterprise uses to move its e-mail users from one messaging system to another. The new alliance expands the previous agreement between the two companies which provided SIMS with gateway and directory synchronization technology for Microsoft Mail, Lotus cc:Mail and IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  PROFS messaging systems.

"With this new relationship, large enterprises will have the ability to both integrate Sun Internet Mail Server software with their existing systems or to migrate away from older messaging environments," said Jan Eddy, president of Wingra Technologies. "By providing gateways, directory synchronization, and migration technology, Sun is enabling their customers to deploy Sun Internet Mail Server software in the most cost-effective and efficient manner."

"Multiple, proprietary messaging solutions are impacting the bottom line," said Stuart Wells, Senior Director, Sun Microsystems. "Wingra's gateways provide the technology needed for messaging interoperability and for migration to Sun Internet Mail Server."

Migrating to SIMS With Wingra Technology

With Wingra's migration technology, the stored e-mail and folders of all the e-mail users can be moved by a central administrator to SIMS, preserving the knowledge of the enterprise.

Messages can be replied to after they have been moved to the new system, attachments are converted properly, and status flags, subjects, and dates are preserved. Sun Internet Mail Server software will take care of the changes in mail routing and update all of the directories in the enterprise with the users' new e-mail addresses. In contrast to other tools that are run by end users, Wingra's migration technology is managed centrally to maintain control and oversight of the migration process. This eliminates the need to train thousands of users on how to use a migration tool.

Availability

The first release of Sun Internet Mail Server with additional gateways is expected by the end of 1998. Additional gateways and migration technology will be released as they are integrated into Sun Internet Mail Server.

Until then, Sun customers can benefit immediately from this new alliance by using Wingra's connectivity, directory synchronization, and migration technology prior to its integration into Sun Internet Mail Server software.

its Lotus cc:Mail platform and was looking for a robust, standards-based messaging solution that could scale to thousands of users. We have been very happy with the reliability of Sun Internet Mail Server which allows a seamless and gradual migration of users while keeping both e-mail platforms synchronized. The migration tools from Wingra allowed us time to familiarize our faculty and staff with Sun Internet Mail Server before we pulled the plug on cc:Mail. Sun's customers should be excited about this expanded partnership as it will make it much easier to integrate Sun Internet Mail Server into and migrate away from other enterprise messaging systems."
