Sun Microsystems and NRaD sign CRADA.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 19, 1997--Sun Microsystems Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Sun Microsystems Federal Inc., and the Naval Command and Control Ocean Surveillance Center RDTE Division (NRaD), an advanced research and engineering laboratory for the U.S. Navy, have signed a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA).

Sun Federal and NRaD will jointly develop and test a methodology to re-engineer very large software systems by integrating Sun Microsystem's Java(TM) platform into the Navy's web-oriented, three-tiered application framework.

The Joint Maritime Command Information System (JMCIS) ashore command and control software system will be re-engineered as a demonstration of the new approach required to provide increased functionality and simultaneously reduce life-cycle support costs for major JMCIS software systems.

Capt. Hull, JMCIS program manager at SPAWAR, speaking recently at a conference in San Diego, said, "We have just signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with Sun Microsystems that will port JMCIS '98 to Java so that we can level the playing field for everyone using Java. That is, essentially every developer out there producing segments for JMCIS.

"This will give us a new level of hardware independence and cross-platform information sharing, which is of significant value in the joint arena as everyone realizes ... this is the golden path."
