SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ

The new ATCA portfolio, powered by the Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS), gives telecommunications customers the ability to connect high-performance multi-core/multithreaded processors directly into flexible 10G networks, providing the foundation for cost-effective next-generation networks.

In addition, the Sun Unified Network Platform (SUN-P), a new OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  solution set delivered by Sun, gives Network Equipment Providers (NEPs) a blueprint for radical consolidation of their network elements, which significantly lowers the cost of deployment.

"The Sun servers and solutions we are announcing today add immense value to Sun's Netra line-up, which has already seen six consecutive quarters of year-over-year double-digit billings growth," said Mark Butler, Netra systems product line director, Sun Microsystems. "All 10 of the top NEPs, in addition to 48 of the 50 largest service providers, are deploying Sun systems. Now our expanded Netra ATCA portfolio and the Sun Unified Network Platform can enable NEPs and service providers to increase ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system. In the IT world, there are more ways to compute ROI than Carter has liver pills (and for those of you who never heard of that expression, it means a lot). , lower the cost per subscriber, and lower deployment cost."

The Sun Netra CP3260 and CP3220 ATCA blades both deliver the breakthrough performance of multi-core, 10 GbE computing, in addition to support for the Solaris OS, the most secure carrier-grade OS for the telecommunications industry. Both ATCA blades also feature 8 DIMM (Dual In-Line Memory Module) A printed circuit board that holds memory chips and plugs into a DIMM socket on the motherboard. See memory module.

. The AdvancedRTM's enable standardization, high I/O capacity, and system scalability. Sun will initially provide a Dual SAS (1) (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, www.sas.com) A software company that specializes in data warehousing and decision support software based on the SAS System. The Sun Netra CP3260 ATCA blade server is the industry's first Network Equipment Building Standard (NEBS) Level 3 Certified server powered by UltraSPARC T2 processors, the world's fastest single socket processor, making the Sun Netra CP3260 ATCA blade server the most efficient ATCA blade server in the market today. It delivers multithreaded world-record performance with dramatic power and space savings, in addition to massive compute density with more than 2,300 threads per rack. The Sun Netra CP3260 ATCA blade server running with the Netra(TM) Data Plane Software Suite delivers 20 Gb/s of line rate IPv4 forwarding, allowing network processing-based applications to leverage into a sustainable supply chain and viable business model compared to solutions based on Network Processor chip and board offerings.

The Sun Netra CP3220 ATCA blade server, powered by AMD Opteron Dual-Core processors, is a single-socket dual-core ATCA blade server, upgradable to quad-core. It features two Advanced Mezzanine Card Advanced Mezzanine Cards are printed circuit boards (PCBs) that follow a specification of the PCI Industrial Computers Manufacturers Group (PICMG), with more than 100 companies participating. Known as AdvancedMC™, the official specification designation is AMC.  (AMC (Advanced Mezzanine Card) See AdvancedTCA. ) slots, and a choice of Solaris 10, carrier-grade Linux or Windows operating systems.

Sun Unified Network Platform Lowers Cost of Deployment

Sun is also introducing today the Sun Unified Network Platform (SUN-P), a solution set that leverages Sun's Chip Multithreading Multitasking within a single program. It allows multiple streams of execution to take place concurrently within the same program, each stream processing a different transaction or message.  Technology (CMT CMT Certified Medical Transcriptionist.

) servers, integrated 10G multithreaded networking, Sun(TM) Logical Domains (LDoms) virtualization technology, and Netra Data Plane Software Suite for packet processing. SUN-P helps consolidate the network and dramatically lowers the cost of wireless deployments, particularly in emerging markets. Using SUN-P, NEPs can reduce development time by up to 50 percent, reduce core network costs, and lower the cost of subscription, enabling carriers to go after new markets cost-effectively. In turn, carriers can market their broadband wireless services on a much more targeted basis and see a faster positive return on their investment.
