Summertime Plans for New Teachers.

STUDENT SLANT

Dear Friends,

Summer is here ... already. I never imagined that my first year as a classroom teacher would have passed so quickly. The year is somewhat of a blur blur (blur) indistinctness, clouding, or fogging.

have abundant resources available for learning about current classroom techniques, discipline practices, and general professional development. It is so encouraging to me, as a young teacher just starting out, that at any time there is someone willing to help me recognize and strengthen my skills as a teacher.

I am willing to make a bet with readers that, at some time or another, someone joked that you were going into education just so you could have your summers off! This is my first "summer off" and I can tell you right now that I will be doing many things, but being "off" from school is not really one of them. My thoughts are on the fall. Reflecting on how I started the school year last year, what worked and what did not, has my mind working overtime Overtime is the amount of time someone works beyond normal working hours. Normal hours may be determined in several ways:
  • by custom (what is considered healthy or reasonable by society),
  • by practices of a given trade or profession,
  • by legislation,
to prepare for my new class of 1st-graders. It is my job to make sure that I seek out the best materials and most current resources so that my students are given the best opportunity for a quality education. I am anxious to take advantage of local workshops and summer courses to help me prepare for my new students. I also look forward to the benefits of staying on track with new trends in the field of education.

Admittedly, it would be nice to have my days free, and I am sure that someday some·day

down the road I can take that option if I choose; but right now, the opportunities that are available are too good to pass up. I encourage you to seek out what is offered in your area and soak up the wealth of information that is out there. We made a commitment to the children who are our future, and it is up to us to do all that we can to prepare them to lead the way. Once you receive that teaching certificate or license, please do not think that your job is done. Truly become a "lifelong learner." Not only will you feel good about yourself, but your students will thank you, too.
