The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  and Turkey will participate Tuesday in a Sema, a sacred ceremony honoring the great Sufi Master Jelaluddin Rumi, at the University of Oregon's Erb Memorial Union.

The evening will feature classical Turkish music, poetry, singing and the prayer dancing of the Whirling Dervishes. In their traditional tall felt hats and brilliant white garments, turners whirl in unison, attuning to the music of the heart.

The Mevlevi Order was founded in the 13th century in Konya, Turkey, by Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi. He began the spinning prayer dance that gave rise to the term `whirling dervish' and spread throughout the world, uniting people of all faiths.

The traditional ceremony, depicting the transformative power of love, has been passed down generation to generation for more than 700 years. It continues to be celebrated throughout the world.

Postneshin Jelaluddin Loras, head of the Mevlevi Order of America, will lead the Sema. He is the son of the late Suleyman Hayati Dede, the former Mevlevi Sheikh sheikh

Among Arabic-speaking tribes, especially Bedouin, the male head of the family, as well as of each successively larger social unit making up the tribal structure. The sheikh is generally assisted by an informal tribal council of male elders.

Many of the participants in this ceremony have traveled to Turkey, performing the Sema at sacred Mevlevi sites in Konya and Istanbul.
