Success is the best medicine.

Birmingham has beaten dozens of other UK businesses to be named Retailer of the Year in a national competition.

Chemist Direct, founded by entrepreneur Mitesh Soma a year ago, scooped the accolade at the finals of the annual Startups Awards at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, London.

The awards were organised by Startups.co.uk, the number one small business website for UK entrepreneurs, and sponsored by Barclays Bank.

Mitesh started Chemist Direct last November, taking on high street giants such as Boots by offering thousands of health and beauty products at discounted prices. The company is now getting 80,000 hits a week and has turned over pounds 5 million in its first year.

"I am delighted to win this award which is thanks to the hard work of all the Chemist Direct team based at our Smethwick HQ," said Mitesh.

"Considering we only started the company one year ago, it seems like we have come a long way over that time."
