Birmingham has beaten dozens of other UK businesses to be named Retailer of the Year in a national competition.

Chemist (jargon) chemist - (Cambridge) Someone who wastes computer time on number crunching when you'd far rather the computer were working out anagrams of your name or printing Snoopy calendars or running life patterns. May or may not refer to someone who actually studies chemistry.  Direct, founded by entrepreneur entrepreneur (än'trəprənûr`) [Fr.,=one who undertakes], person who assumes the organization, management, and risks of a business enterprise.  Mitesh Soma soma (sō`mə), psychotropic plant, the juice of which was sometimes drunk as part of the Vedic sacrifice (see Veda). Many hymns in the Rig-Veda are in praise of soma.  a year ago, scooped the accolade at the finals of the annual Startups Awards at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, London.

The awards were organised by Startups.co.uk, the number one small business website for UK entrepreneurs, and sponsored by Barclays Bank.

Mitesh started Chemist Direct last November, taking on high street giants such as Boots by offering thousands of health and beauty products at discounted prices. The company is now getting 80,000 hits a week and has turned over pounds 5 million in its first year.

"I am delighted to win this award which is thanks to the hard work of all the Chemist Direct team based at our Smethwick HQ," said Mitesh.

"Considering we only started the company one year ago, it seems like we have come a long way over that time."
