Subtle connections.


The excellent issue on advertising (Advertising overload, NI 393) did not consider the subtle connection between sports reporting Sports Report is one of the longest-running programmes on British radio. It started in the first week of 1948, and has always been aired from 5.00 to 6.00 p.m. on Saturday evenings during the football season, although commentaries on matches starting around 5.15 p.m.  and advertising.  I asked what I had to do to get the newsroom to pay attention to the issues we were concerned about. I was told they received so much information from small pressure groups, they could not follow up everything. Public broadcasters should remove sports reporting from the news slots, and re-allocate that time specifically to reporting the concerns of their local communities.
