After reading the recent article in Childhood Education on "Teaching Religious Diversity Through Children's Literature," I thought this book should be reviewed even though it was published several years ago. It begins with this passage: "People all over the world have made special places where they gather to worship, celebrate, meditate med·i·tate

, and hope." The book highlights 28 sacred places around the world, using stunning "paper relief" illustrations by Giles Laroche. The book ends with an illustration of the stars in the night sky and the conclusion that "some sacred places aren't made by people at all." It has a spiritual and inclusive feel.

Younger children will be fascinated with the illustrations and the less detailed text. A second level of text includes age-appropriate objective explanations and summaries of the world's religions. A world map with the sites of the sacred places is featured at the end. Ages 3+.
