The 97-day growth research initiative is the first-ever success in completing a major crop growth cycle in space. Through video monitoring and data sent from the International Space Station, DuPont scientists also examined the effects of zero-gravity and other elements in space regarding plant growth.

The soybean seed experiment was launched in June aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour by DuPont subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred Pioneer Hi-Bred is one of the largest U.S. companies which produces hybrid seeds for agriculture. History

Contrary to the popular fiction image of robots as ambulatory machines of human appearance capable of performing almost any task, most robotic systems are anchored to fixed positions . With the soybeans and seeds now on Earth, scientists will analyze the harvested seeds to determine if they have improved features that could benefit farmers or consumers. Seeds exhibiting unique and desirable qualities will be planted by Pioneer scientists to determine if the traits can be inherited by future generations.
