SPRINGFIELD - Jazmin Montalvo-Aguirre, a well-liked freshman at Springfield High School Springfield High School may refer to:

, became severely dizzy after a gym class Wednesday. Rushed to the hospital, the 15-year old later died, leading students and faculty on Thursday to honor her memory in an emotional ceremony.

Montalvo-Aguirre was playing basketball in a late-morning gym class when she was struck in the head with a basketball, school officials said.

Montalvo-Aguirre kept on playing, school spokesman Jeff DeFranco said. In later interviews with school officials, he said, students and staff described the blow from the basketball as "uneventful."

in Eugene, DeFranco said. She had emergency surgery, and died late Wednesday afternoon, he said.

"The students were pretty shaken up about it," DeFranco said.

The cause of death has not been determined. There may appear to be a connection between the blow from the basketball and the student's death, DeFranco said, but the cause won't be known until an autopsy is completed.

A noon gathering in the high school's courtyard drew 200 students, said Sarah Silveira, a freshman, who had known Montalvo-Aguirre since sixth grade.

"Even though some people didn't really know her, they took the time to light a candle To Light a Candle is the 2004 second fantasy novel of Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory's Obsidian Trilogy. Plot summary

Freshman Amy Forsell said Montalvo-Aguirre was extremely friendly and popular. "She was such a sweet girl," Forsell said.

Students assembled a makeshift memorial in the courtyard, bringing pictures of Montalvo-Aguirre, bunches of carnations and roses, and hand-lettered signs, one of which read: "We will miss you."
