Student soloists tackle concertos today at Beall.

Five concerts are scheduled this week at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University Symphony, under the direction of professor Wayne Bennett There have been two well-known people named Wayne Bennett:
  • Wayne Bennett - Blues Guitarist
  • Wayne Bennett - Former rugby league footballer and current coach of the Brisbane Broncos.
, will accompany three student soloists selected in a schoolwide concerto competition at 3 p.m. today in Beall Concert Hall.

Tickets, available at the door, are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

Jasmine Hedrick, a doctoral degree student in flute performance, will be featured in Frank Martin's Ballade ballade (bəläd`), in literature, verse form developed in France in the 14th and 15th cent. The ballade usually contains three stanzas of eight lines with three rhymes and a four-line envoy (a short, concluding stanza).  for Flute and String Orchestra.

Brenda Lauffenberger, a senior from Pleasant Hill, will be featured in Concerto for Marimba marimba: see xylophone.

Ryan Chaney, a senior from Salem, will play Martin's Ballade for Trombone trombone [Ital.,=large trumpet], brass wind musical instrument of cylindrical bore, twice bent on itself, having a sliding section that lengthens or shortens it and thus regulates the pitch. Tracy Freeze, a graduate teaching fellow, will conduct members of the Oregon Percussion Ensemble in a concert of music by composer and conductor William Kraft at 8 p.m. Monday in Beall Hall.

Tickets, available at the door, are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The concert will include a duet by percussionist Freeze and graduate cellist Mintcho Badev: "Encounters V, The Morning of the Winter Sea," written for 13 percussion instruments (one player) and cello.

The Oregon Composers Forum will present new music by UO composition students at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Beall Hall. Admission is free.

The program includes four songs for baritone and piano by Ben Hunter; a duet for French horn and piano and a brass quintet by Eric Ferguson; a taped piece, "Confused in an Unfriendly World," by Melissa Spiteri-Stark; several pieces for solo piano by Chris Randall and Troy Rogers; and a Rogers quartet for flute, trombone, vibraphone vibraphone

The UO Women's Chorus, Men's Chorus and Lab Choir will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Beall Hall. Admission is free.

The Men's Chorus, directed by graduate teaching fellow John Cox, will present music by 20th century composers Charles Ives, Vincent Persichetti and Kirke Mechem.

The UO Lab Choir - conducted by graduate students Elyzabeth Meade, Eric Gault n. 1. (Geol.) A series of beds of clay and marl in the South of England, between the upper and lower greensand of the Cretaceous period.  and Katie Hallor - will sing "Ave Maria" by Tomas Luis de Victoria, "Ave Maria" by Igor Stravinsky, Four Folk Songs by Johannes Brahms, the `Little Organ' Mass by Joseph Haydn and "Sure on This Shining Night" by Samuel Barber.

Electro-acoustic music composer Allen Strange will be one of three featured artists in a concert by Future Music Oregon, the performing arm of the UO Computer Music Center, at 8 p.m. Saturday in Room 198 of the Music Building.

Tickets, available at the door, are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The concert also will feature performances by two guests: violinist Patricia Strange and saxophonist William Trimble. Strange will play the world premiere of Brian Belet's "Lyra," a piece for amplified violin and Kyma. Trimble will play Strange's "Velocity Studies IV," written for alto saxophone and digital media.

The program also includes new works created by UO students in the Future Music Oregon studios for live-performance instruments, real-time computer graphic animation and Yamaha Disklavier.
