. Australian historian Stuart-Fox has put together a concise, thoughtful and well-grounded history to help increase our knowledge. The language in the book isn't simple, but the writing is clear and it is well organized. Stuart-Fox moves through each chapter in about 25 pages, with four or five subsections in each chapter. There are good scholarly notes at the end, a suggested reading list, and a very good index. Four full-color pages of photos in the middle seem odd: they're nice, but not really enough to justify a separate section. The author isn't afraid to state opinions, but he's not reckless about them either. Prospective users of the book will either find the complete integration of Chinese and Southeast Asian material particularly useful or potentially bothersome. We can see why Australians might be used to looking at the area as a whole, but Americans usually don't see the two histories interwoven in·ter·weave
