Structured Internetworks Industry's First True 100Mbps Active Traffic Manager; Embedded architecture enables line-speed bandwidth management.

, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 4, 1998--Structured Internetworks Inc., a leader in policy-based IP bandwidth management Controlling the traffic flow in a network. See bandwidth manager.  products and technologies, today announced the newest member to its high-performance IPath family of active traffic managers, the IPath/100.

The IPath/100 will be introduced this week at the NetWorld+Interop Spring '98 in Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States. . The IPath/100 addresses the need for better allocation and control of bandwidth among all host, group, subnet (SUBNETwork) A logical division of a local area network, which is created to improve performance and provide security. To enhance performance, subnets limit the number of nodes that compete for available bandwidth. , and application traffic, while providing more predictable network performance. IPath/100 works with routers to control traffic across Internet and wide area links, or with switches to manage traffic between Intranet and application servers.

Active Traffic Management

Active traffic management enables complete network control of bandwidth usage and allocation on a continuously dynamic basis. Unlike other bandwidth restriction or static segmentation technologies, active traffic management allows real-time provisioning and control of entire link capacities based on defined thresholds. This proactive management creates virtual "bandwidth pipes" that utilize available bandwidth more effectively. This added efficiency eliminates the need for expensive hardware and/or leased line A private communications channel leased from a common carrier. Most digital lines require four wires (two pairs) for full-duplex transmission.

upgrades. Traffic can be managed by specific IP address, subnet, application type, or by any combination thereof.

IPath/100 Delivers Optimum Control and Speed

The IPath/100 is the first product in the industry to deliver high throughput, low-latency policy-based bandwidth and traffic management at 100Mbps rates. The IPath/100 can be inserted in the network without introducing performance bottlenecks between segments or gateways. IPath/100 includes 10/100 Ethernet interfaces with architecture designed to easily handle 100Mbps at full wire speed. It can balance traffic across hundreds of subnets and several thousand individually defined hosts and services.

policies, makes IPath/100 the only product in its class for performance and flexibility," says Theresa Wang, Structured's VP of Engineering. "There is enough capacity in our hardware design to afford flexibility for new features and markets as they emerge."

congestion - When the offered load of a data communication path exceeds the capacity.
 Elimination

The IPath Family is the only set of products in the industry that combines the benefits of solid-state, high-performance hardware with dynamic traffic controls to effectively manage traffic without traditional queues and buffers. The IPath/100 eliminates congestion by recognizing in advance, the potential for a policy to be overrun 1. overrun - A frequent consequence of data arriving faster than it can be consumed, especially in serial line communications. For example, at 9600 baud there is almost exactly one character per millisecond, so if a silo can hold only two characters and the machine takes  and then gradually "throttling back" the sender. This throttling technology reduces speed conversion point congestion and packet loss with less than 0.1 ms of port-to-port packet delay. This is particularly important on heavily loaded WAN links where queuing The process of lining up events in the order you want them processed. Whether it refers to packets in an IP network that search for the most optimal path to their destination, or telephone callers sitting in a "hold queue" waiting to be answered, queuing means the same thing: deciding on  may introduce unwanted variable transmission delays.

The IPath/100 hardware, available immediately, is introductorily priced for the NetWorld+Interop Spring show at US $9,500. Structured Internetworks can be reached at 408/467-0880, or via the web at http://www.thestructure.com.
