Not to be confused with the Dodge Power Wagon, the Magnum is more butch muscle car than old-fashioned station wagon. There's a definite visceral language this car speaks to its driver. Our silver-steel-metallic R/T drew appreciative nods, not to mention respect, on our drive on the 1-15 from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. The low-slung roof recalls the "chopped" look of a smoking 1950s hot rod, but in side there's surprising headroom and legroom: The Magnum can carry five adults and their gear in comfort. The excellent Boston Acoustics sound system made our MP3 CDs sound great, What's more, the 340-horsepower, 5.7-liter HEMI Multi-Displacement Engine is surprisingly gas-conscious: During normal driving it glides along on four cylinders, but when the butch driver in you wants to roar, all eight cylinders spring to life. Available trims include SE, SXT, R/T, and the ultimate SRT8. If the R/T's 5.7-liter engine isn't hot enough, strap yourself into the smoking 425-horsepower, 6.l-liter version, available on the SRT8. Upscale extras include DVD-based navigation, rear seat entertainment systems, and Chrysler's UConnect hands-free communication system. It all adds up to a family car that still appeals to your dark side.
