Street nurse Cathy Crowe receives $100,000 Atkinson award.

The award provides $100,000 per year for up to three years. Crowe will use the award to strengthen her health care efforts on the street as well as her research and education work around public solutions to the homeless problem at the local and national level.

Cathy Crowe told the award ceremony that a solution to homelessness is possible. "There is no question in my mind that we can turn this homeless disaster around. No more homeless deaths, no more inhumane in·hu·mane

Cathy Crowe has worked as a street nurse for 15 years and has been involved in numerous coalitions and public education work for the homeless. In 1998 she co-founded the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee, an organization that has dramatically increased the public's understanding of homelessness by calling it "a national disaster".

Crowe has also led efforts for the 1% solution, a proposed public policy initiative that calls on governments to double their commitment to housing programs by restoring and renewing housing spending.
