(r) Operating System operating system (OS) Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs. Stratus Computer, Inc. (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange : SRA SrA abbr. senior airman ) and SNMP Research International, Inc. today announced an agreement between the two companies to provide the EMANATE Run-time Extensible Agent System on Stratus' Continuum Enterprise Server (CES), an industry-leading family of fault-tolerant computers running Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX(1) Version 10.10 operating system. Emanate is available immediately on the Continuum Enterprise Server, and will enable customers to manage CES system and application resources from any SNMP-based network management application (such as HP OpenView) through SNMP Research's extensible agent technology. The Continuum Enterprise Server brings an array of fault-tolerant features to open computing environments, including redundant hardware with hot pluggability, sophisticated self-checking, and self-diagnosing logic. No user programming is needed to access the server's fault-tolerant features. The Continuum Enterprise Server is backed by Stratus' Remote Service Network (RSN RSN - Real Soon Now ) which is designed to meet the needs of customers running critical online applications. RSN operates as a continuous direct line between the customer site and Stratus' Customer Assistance Center, and is monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week. "SNMP Research's extensible agent technology makes it possible for Continuum Enterprise Server users to easily add comprehensive SNMP-based management to their application environments," said John Scanlon, Stratus vice president of Marketing for Stratus' Continuum Products Division. "This level of visibility and control is especially important for customers who require fault-tolerant operation, since their system management practices tend to be very proactive and demanding." "Availability and manageability are complementary goals," said Dr. Jeffrey Case, president of SNMP Research. "By providing the EMANATE Master Agent with the Continuum Enterprise Server's operating system, Stratus has accelerated the process of making applications manageable. Customers who turn to Stratus for high availability systems will undoubtedly leverage EMANATE-provided manageability features to increase overall applications availability, as well." About EMANATE The EMANATE Run-time Extensible Agent System expands the scope of SNMP management via modularly extensible management agents. The modular, hierarchical EMANATE agent system consists of a Master Agent plus zero or many Subagents which support various Management Information Base (MIB (1) (Management Information Base) The hierarchical database used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to describe the particular device being monitored. MIB objects are identified using ASN.1 syntax. See SNMP, RMON, OID and ASN.1. ) modules. The result is a run-time extensible agent to which MIB objects can dynamically be added and deleted by connecting and disconnecting the Subagent Sub`a´gent n. 1. (Law) A person employed by an agent to transact the whole, or a part, of the business intrusted to the latter. responsible for that MIB module, all without the need to recompile To compile a program again. A program is recompiled after a change has been made to it in order to test and run the revised version. Programs are recompiled many times during the course of development and maintenance. See compile. , relink and restart the agent. About SNMP Research International Based in Knoxville, Tenn., SNMP Research International supplies standards-based SNMP and Web technology products.
