Strategy Analytics: Indium Phosphide Market Growth Requires Monolithic Integration; Optoelectronics Drive Demand for Indium Phosphide Bulk Substrates.

LONDON -- The recent Strategy Analytics study, "Current Status and Future Prospects for InP Bulk Substrates," outlines worldwide market demand for Indium indium (ĭn`dēəm), a metallic chemical element; symbol In; at. no. 49; at. wt. 114.82; m.p. 156.6°C;; b.p. about 2,080°C;; sp. gr. 7.31 at 20°C;; valence +1, +2, or +3.  Phosphide phosphide

Any of a class of chemical compounds in which phosphorous is combined with a metal. Phosphides exhibit a wide variety of chemical and physical properties. Phosphides that are rich in metal have high melting points and are hard, brittle, and chemically inert; these
(InP) bulk substrates, and predicts that demand for InP bulk substrates will stay low as end-markets requiring InP components, e.g., 40Gbps fibre-optics and FTTX (Fiber To The X) Refers to all the "fiber-to-the-wherever" technologies. See FTTC and FTTP. See also FTX.  (fibre to the home/premises/kerb etc) remain in the early stages of development with only pockets of demand. Overall demand for InP bulk substrates is forecast to grow at a CAAGR CAAGR Compounded Average Annual Growth Rate  of 6 percent for the 2003-2008 timeframe.

Main demand for InP Bulk substrates is from optoelectronics applications translating into the market for semi-conducting InP bulk substrates representing 67 percent of total demand. This 2:1 ratio for semi-conducting (SC) versus semi-insulating (SI) wafers is expected to remain in place through to 2008.

"InP does have a defendable position in the future, but monolithic Single object. Self contained. One unit.  integration will be the key to greater success for the InP market," states Asif Anwar, Director, GaAs Service. "Until that happens, we will continue to see low overall volume demand for InP bulk substrates."
