Strategic business alliance creates object-oriented data mart and data warehouse solutions; Cincom Systems and Prism Solutions take leadership position in meeting industry demand for data marts.

CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 1996--In an effort to meet the rapidly growing demand for smaller, departmental data warehouses, or data marts, Cincom Systems (Cincom Systems, Inc., Cincinnati, OH, www.cincom.com) One of the largest and most experienced software companies in the world. Founded in 1968 by Thomas Nies, who has the distinction of being the longest-serving company chief in the industry, Cincom sells manufacturing, financial and , Inc. and Prism Solutions, Inc. have formed a joint marketing alliance. Through a new integrated solution, Cincom and Prism are now well positioned to lead the fast growing data mart industry in providing a rapid, low-risk way to build a data mart on top of an object-oriented platform.

Under the alliance, Cincom's TOTAL FrameWork(TM), an object- oriented application assembly environment, has been integrated with Prism Warehouse Manager(TM), Prism's data warehouse management software. The result of this integration is the first data mart solution to utilize an object-relational database A database that provides both relational and object database capabilities. ) as the target data store.

With the ORDB functionality within TOTAL FrameWork, companies can now achieve full use of warehoused data, as well as interaction with operational systems - all within the same application. For example, a customer support application can now access complete customer history information from a data warehouse and, from the same application, access live operational databases for tracking outstanding orders and responding to account balance inquiries.

TOTAL FrameWork's ORDB provides multidatabase access to a federation of external databases, including Informix, Oracle, Sybase and SUPRA A relational DBMS from Cincom Systems, Inc., Cincinnati, OH (www.cincom.com) that runs on IBM mainframes and VAXs. It includes a query language and a program that automates the database design process. (R) Server. Prism Warehouse Manager supports the iterative development A discipline for developing systems based on producing deliverables often. Each iteration, consisting of requirements, analysis & design, implementation and testing, results in the release of an executable subset of the final product, which grows incrementally from iteration to  process by providing data extraction Data extraction is the act or process of retrieving (binary) data out of (usually unstructured or badly structured) data sources for further data processing or data storage (data migration). , transformation and integration of legacy and operational data from, or to, any of these databases. By utilizing the integrated solution, individual departmental data marts can be linked using TOTAL FrameWork's multidatabase facilities. This provides flexibility for control over individual data marts and operational data on the department's database of choice without jeopardizing an organization's enterprise-wide data warehouse strategy.

Fast, Flexible and Accessible Data Types

Now each data mart or data warehouse will have a global, enterprise-wide view of disparate data types within an object-oriented environment. As more and more companies begin to leverage the Internet/Intranet, data integration strategies will become critical, since applications running on these backbones can utilize various data types including multimedia. The Cincom/Prism solution enables the building of applications that integrate operational data, warehoused data and multimedia data.

"As organizations increasingly rely on cross-functional business applications and data warehouses to enhance their competitive edge, TOTAL FrameWork provides them the capability of leveraging the benefits of both solutions for quick, efficient access to the data warehouse and live operational data," says Marco Emrich, Senior Director of Cincom Systems' Advanced Technology Group.

"Moreover, the object-oriented capabilities of TOTAL FrameWork provide added flexibility within cross-functional business applications. Complex data types are being used more prevalently in business each day. With TOTAL FrameWork's ORDB, a variety of data types - including multimedia, graphics, and alphanumeric data, can be recognized as one global data type. Plus, TOTAL FrameWork provides features for accessing the data warehouse over the Internet/Intranet via the World Wide Web."
