ACEI members are dedicated to an enlightened, child-centered Adj. 1. child-centered - designed to promote a child's personal qualities rather than to provide training or information humane - marked or motivated by concern with the alleviation of suffering approach to education that respects the child's developmental experiences at home, in school, and in the community. This philosophy is reflected in all professional programs, including publications, resource materials, topic workshops, and conferences. Members represent every segment of the preschool, elementary, and middle school fields, and include child care providers, teachers, teachers-in-training, administrators, researchers, teacher educators, and institutional subscribers. Each year, using feedback from members, the Executive Board prepares a list of strategic goals for the Association for the immediate future and beyond. The list is distributed to members of the Executive Board and to ACEI Committee Chairs to use as a guide when planning programs and services for the coming year, and to the membership-at-large via the ACEI Exchange. The activities listed below are those that the respective committees plan to accomplish in 2000-2001 to help ACEI meet its Strategic Goals. MISSION OF ACEI The Mission of ACEI is to promote and support in the global community the optimal education and development of children, from birth through early adolescence adolescence, time of life from onset of puberty to full adulthood. The exact period of adolescence, which varies from person to person, falls approximately between the ages 12 and 20 and encompasses both physiological and psychological changes. , and to influence the professional growth of educators and the efforts of others who are committed to the needs of children in a changing society. PURPOSE OF ACEI * To promote the inherent rights, education, and well-being of all children in the home, school, and community * To work for desirable conditions, programs, and practices for children from infancy infancy, stage of human development lasting from birth to approximately two years of age.
