, loser stepfather and less than bright half-brother. After just packing up yet another of one of his fly-by-night T-shirt shops, Kai's stepfather brings him to Sun Haven, a plastic town of tourism, money and best of all for Kai, surfing. Kai quickly learns that being a newcomer brings many challenges, the biggest of which for Kai is getting a chance to surf "Screamers," the prime surfing spot in the area that is run by the wealthy and mean locals. Kai is determined to get a spot "in the line" and open the best surf up to everyone. The story follows Kai as he goes head to head with the wealthy surfers both on the waves and in the town, trying to make friends and build a family for himself.

plot - the story that is told in a novel or play or movie etc.; "the characters were well drawn but the plot was banal"
is quick and engaging and readers (especially boys, I predict) will connect with the challenges Kai sees and emotions he feels. The surfing plotline is realistic and believable. This will be an excellent choice for many reluctant readers. Sarah Applegate, Libn., River Ridge River Ridge is the name of more than one location.
