StoreAge Manages Critical Space Mission Data; StoreAge SVM Protects JPL Images and Data from Mars, Saturn and Other NASA Missions.

IRVINE, Calif. -- StoreAge Networking Technologies, the leading provider of split-path SAN storage management and advanced multi-tiered, data protection solutions, today announced that its StoreAge SVM and related suite of data protection software are in use at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA to aid in the storage and disaster recovery protection of critical images and data from NASA unmanned space missions.

JPL's Multimission Instrument Processing Lab, MIPL is responsible for processing mission images. They also house raw data for scientists. Currently there are over 25 terabytes of data being managed and protected by StoreAge solutions.

Originally JPL relied heavily on NAS storage (Network Attached Storage) as it provided a simple way to continually add more disks and volumes when needed. But as demands -- especially availability demands -- continued to grow; the group decided they needed a more comprehensive solution. Some missions require 24x7 availability. They could not reach that objective using the existing NAS and tape configuration, so the JPL group decided on StoreAge SVM to help manage their storage needs. With PIT (point in time) snapshots, they can roll back to any point -- almost instantly. Also the StoreAge system allows the group to re-provision and allocate storage on-the-fly. The JPL group found they could use the StoreAge product for mirroring data using any standard fibre channel RAID box, therefore, saving considerable money. Another reason for the implementation of the StoreAge SVM was that the group needed something that would scale efficiently while still providing data reliability and management.

The processing lab uses StoreAge to manage the entire SAN from one central location. There is no need for third-party management interfaces, since they can control and manage everything from the StoreAge SVM. Central management, the ability to use a variety of storage devices and an entire suite of disaster recovery software to provide 24x7 data protection are all key benefits of StoreAge products.
