Store gets green light.

A SUPERMARKET project promising 200 new jobs and a pounds 25m investment for a former pit town has been given the go-ahead.

Wansbeck Wansbeck is a local government district in south-east Northumberland, England. Its main settlements are Ashington, Bedlington and Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.

The district is mostly urban, on the North Sea coast north of the Tyneside conurbation.

Ashington is a town in Northumberland, England, with a population of around 28,000 people.
, with an overwhelming vote in favour of it.

The project has now to be referred to the Government Office North East to be assessed in relation to overall retail developments in the region.

But Asda is confident that GONE will also back the development, given the support that it has already received locally.

Work could start within weeks and the store could be ready for its first customers at the end of next year.

 Bartram, Asda's property communications manager, said: "We are absolutely delighted by the council's decision. It represents 200 new jobs in Ashington and a pounds 25m investment in the town.

"We have had great support from the community in Ashington and we are keen to start work on site as soon as possible."

The Asda store will be built on a town centre site that was Ashington Football Club's home ground of Portland Park for 100 years until earlier this year.
