StorageTek announces direct sales of 9710 midrange automated tape library, Twin Peaks 4890 36-track cartridge tape drive.

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 2, 1995--Storage Technology Corp. (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
:STK) today announced the 9710, the newest member of StorageTek's Nearline(R) library family and the Twin Peaks 4890 36-Track cartridge tape drive for the proprietary and open computing See open system and open source.  midrange marketplaces.

The 9710 and 4890 advance StorageTek's successful mainframe Nearline lineage into the midrange environment.

Bill Mottram, StorageTek director of connectivity solutions and market planning, said: "The 9710 is the first midrange subsystem designed to fully integrate advanced drive and robotic technologies. The introduction of the 9710 library, together with advanced drive and tape management software for the AS/400 and open computing environments, further demonstrates StorageTek's commitment to this market and to our customers. We are delivering a high-performance subsystem designed to meet growing automation needs of todayOs midrange marketplace."

StorageTek's 9710 adds high performance and reliability to office automation, with the added benefit of large capacity. The 9710 meets the storage needs of today's smaller, more efficient workspaces and allows for increased performance and capacity as end-users' storage requirements change and grow.

The announcement was made at FORUM95, the StorageTek users group. This product announcement is targeted for direct sales and the product had been announced previously for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  sales.

The 9710 is designed to integrate advanced drive and robotic technologies to meet the growing automation needs of customers with midrange computing systems. The basic unit contains 252 half-inch tape cartridges and can be upgraded on-site to 420 or 588 cartridges. In less than 12 square feet of floor space, the 9710 offers tape storage capacities up to 1,400 gigabytes. The compact cartridge access port holds 14 cartridges and is designed to allow fast entry or exit of cartridges.

The 9710 provides attachment to multiple-client computing systems via SCSI SCSI

 2. Through StorageTek's UNIX-based Automated Cartridge System Library Server software (ACSLS ACSLS Automatic Cartridge System Library Software

StorageTek continues its direction as a solutions provider by delivering an integrated solution for the AS/400 (the new advanced Data Management Software (DMS (1) (Document Management System) See document management.

)) with the 9710, in addition to its open computing tape management software, the REEL product line. StorageTek also provides options to allow customers who have tape management packages installed to interface with the 9710. StorageTek will continue to work with third-party software companies to develop and integrate software packages for this product that allow attachment to the UNIX UNIX

 and PC/LAN environments.

Twin Peaks Drives Designed for Midrange

Two to six Twin Peaks 4890 Cartridge Tape Drives can be attached to the 9710. Twin Peaks is a 3490E-compatible product specifically designed for midrange mission-critical, high-performance automated storage management solutions.

Twin Peaks' architecture is built on StorageTek's successful TimberLine timberline, elevation above which trees cannot grow. Its location is influenced by the various factors that determine temperature, including latitude, prevailing wind directions, and exposure to sunlight.  tape subsystem, including a common head, read/write electronics and associated microcode A set of elementary instructions in a complex instruction set computer (CISC). The microcode resides in a separate high-speed memory and functions as a translation layer between the machine instructions and the circuit level of the computer. .  to allow up to 2.4 GB of storage per cartridge. Twin Peaks delivers additional value to the customer by decreasing the number of cartridges required for multi-volume data sets and improvement in back-up time. The 4890 drive reads and writes in 36-track format, and can read earlier 18-track tapes. High-speed search capability improves the efficiency of data recovery and the 4 MB data buffer ensures improved subsystem access. Combined with Fast and Wide SCSI burst rate of 20 MB per second or a FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) A series of publications issed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that specifies information security guidelines for federal government departments and agencies.  transfer rate of 4.5 MB per second, the 4890 offers optimum data throughput.

The Twin Peaks transport also can be used in manual mode or with an optional 15-cartridge integrated library.

StorageTek has shipped early units of the 9710 library and 4890 tape drive to several OEM customers. The entry-level list price is $65,000 for the 252-slot version of the library and $20,000 for the drive subsystem.
