StorageTek announces DLT-capable 9710 Automated Cartridge System for VAR and OEM markets.

:STK) announced Monday its DLT-capable 9710 Automated Cartridge System for value-added reseller A value-added reseller (VAR) is a company that adds some feature(s) to an existing product(s), then resells it (usually to end-users) as an integrated product or complete "turn-key" solution.  and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  markets.

Initial support is for the Quantum DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  4000, with availability targeted for the first quarter of 1996.

"The demand for digital linear tape-based storage solutions is exploding and the 9710 is the ideal platform for automating those solutions," said Bill Mottram, StorageTek director of connectivity solutions and market planning.

The 9710 is designed to integrate advanced drive and robotic technologies to meet the growing automation needs of customers with midrange midrange Epidemiology The halfway point or midpoint in a set of observations; for most data, MR is calculated as the sum of the smallest observation and the largest observation, divided by 2; for age data, one is added to the numerator; a midrange is usually  computing systems. With this offering, OEM and VAR customers who are reselling Quantum's DLT 4000 will have an ideal automation solution.

The 9710 contains 252 cartridges and can be upgraded on-site to 420 or 588 cartridges. In less than 12 square feet of floor space, the 9710 offers tape storage capacities up to 11.7 terabytes uncompressed. The compact cartridge access port holds 14 cartridges and is designed to allow fast entry or exit of cartridges.

The 9710 is targeted to major open-systems platforms.
