StorageTek(R) (Storage Technology Corp., NYSE:STK) today announced the availability of Media Management Network Appliance, a complete Network Attached Storage (NAS) solution for managing and quickly accessing video information at a cost-efficient entry point.

The plug-and-play appliance, co-developed with Excalibur Technologies Corp. (Nasdaq:EXCA), a leading provider of knowledge retrieval and digital asset management solutions, helps broadcast networks and entertainment companies transition to digital environments and establish a solid foundation for future growth and enhancements.

Digital content is growing exponentially and frequently must remain available for fast access. With the StorageTek appliance, companies can save time and money while improving competitive advantage by unlocking valuable video assets. Movie studios need to log, track and retrieve desired frames from large video libraries and also provide group access to daily runs. Similarly, broadcast organizations need to continually archive and index footage and simultaneously maintain quick access to specific, stored news clips, particularly when supporting breaking news stories.

StorageTek and Excalibur Technologies are working with KPBS Public Television in San Diego to refine solutions for managing video assets within the broadcast environment. KPBS-TV is a development site for the StorageTek Media Management Network Appliance and will provide valuable feedback for StorageTek and Excalibur on future requirements for television production, post production and distribution.

StorageTek's Media Management Network Appliance brings video content under intelligent control with the ability to capture, store, search and view footage quickly and efficiently from a standard, Web browser in a Windows NT environment. Excalibur Screening Room(TM) brings advanced technology for video analysis and indexing to StorageTek's proven, enterprise-class disk, tape and NAS software. The combination has resulted in a scalable, integrated system that takes the guesswork out of media management. In addition to a standalone NAS solution, the appliance can be connected to a Fibre Channel Storage Area Network (SAN) for optimal data throughput and system flexibility.
