Storage Dimensions Introduces RAIDPro External RAID Storage For Entry-Level and Midrange PC-LAN Servers; RAIDPro is the first external storage system that delivers high-end RAID functionality, yet is priced competitively with internal RAID storage.

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 6, 1997--Storage Dimensions (Nasdaq:STDM), the leading independent vendor of high-availability RAID storage systems for the PC-LAN market, today introduced RAIDPro(TM), a compact, easy-to-use, external RAID storage system for entry-level and midrange PC servers running Windows NT and NetWare. RAIDPro provides an open-architecture alternative to closed architecture systems from server manufacturers such as Compaq, HP, and IBM. RAIDPro is the first external RAID storage solution that delivers high-end functionality, yet is competitively priced with internal RAID storage.

"Prior to RAIDPro, IS managers were held captive by their server vendor's internal storage and had difficulty justifying the price of external RAID storage," said Ted Chen, vice president of marketing for Storage Dimensions. "Yet captive storage users face two common problems. First, they must often scrap their internal storage when they change or upgrade servers, operating systems, bus architectures, or capacities. Second, if they manage servers from multiple manufacturers, they end up with a mixture of storage products resulting in higher maintenance and inventory costs. With RAIDPro, they lower their cost over the lifetime of the storage system through server independence, and they pay an entry price that is competitive with internal server storage."

RAIDPro Drives Down The Cost Of Ownership Of PC Server Storage

RAIDPro lowers the cost of ownership for PC server storage by providing high-end resiliency, ease-of-use, and server independence.

-- High-end resiliency - Because RAIDPro incorporates the resiliency features of high-end RAID storage systems, it can withstand component failures and remain on-line and available to users during replacement of components. Also, because RAIDPro is an external solution, it can be quickly and easily moved to a backup server in the case of a server failure. This leads to a direct savings to companies with mission-critical applications since industry estimates currently place the cost of downtime in medium-sized PC-LANs at $18,000 per hour.

-- Ease-of-use - RAIDPro also incorporates high-end ease-of-use features that make it easy to install and maintain. Because RAIDPro includes Storage Dimension's DGR(TM) (Dynamic Growth and Reconfiguration), RAID storage capacity can be added to the system and RAID levels can be reassigned on the fly without having to backup and restore data. This reduces costs associated with administration, training, and downtime, which can save up to 80% of the overall costs that are typically incurred during the life of a storage system.

-- Server-independence - Unlike internal storage from the server manufacturer, RAIDPro does not lock the storage to only one platform. RAIDPro can be used on a wide variety of platforms for deployment in heterogeneous environments. This enables standardization of RAID storage, thus reducing costs for spare parts and training. RAIDPro can then be redeployed as servers change, protecting the customer's investment in storage and preventing premature obsolescence.

RAIDPro is Targeted To Support Entry-Level and Midrange PC Servers

RAIDPro provides an open-architecture alternative to internal storage provided by server manufacturers. A partial list of the entry-level and midrange PC servers that RAIDPro is targeted for is included below.
Compaq ProSignia IBM PC Server Dell PowerEdge 2100

RAIDPro Delivers High-End Resiliency For Mission-Critical Applications

The high-availability RAIDPro system includes multiple hot-spare
disk drives, triple redundant power supplies, and dual redundant
cooling fan modules. Because RAIDPro is an external storage
enclosure whose redundant components are all hot-swappable under
load, it can receive routine or emergency service while the system is
on-line and available to users.
The main power input of RAIDPro includes a cable-lock guard for
added security. An optional battery backup module provides up to 72
hours of protection in the event of a power failure. RAIDPro is also
SAF-TE (SCSI Accessed Fault Tolerant Enclosure) version 1.0
compliant, providing extensive monitoring capabilities. Each system
component in RAIDPro is continually polled for status, and LED
indicators report status at a glance. An audible alarm sounds if
there is a change in system status.

RAIDPro Delivers Ease-of-Use During Installation And Beyond

RAIDPro is truly a plug-and-play RAID storage solution. All RAIDPro
systems come pre-configured for RAID level 5 with the drive modules
pre-installed, making installation and set-up surprisingly simple.
The six-bay RAIDPro enclosure delivers unparalleled ease-of-use and
maintenance.
The system's DGR RAIDCard(TM) controller enables a system
administrator to add capacity to the RAID array, or to reassign RAID
levels in the array, while the system is on-line and accessible to
users. This greatly simplifies maintenance and provides a
considerable time savings. In the past, adding capacity could take
hours, and it occurred off-line. With DGR, time requirements for
adding storage have been reduced from up to 10 hours for a 16 GB
array to less than 5 minutes, and it occurs on-line. RAID levels can
also be migrated on the fly between RAID levels 0, 1, 0+1, 3, and 5.
The result is significantly reduced administration costs, simpler
upgrade processes, and optimal RAID level tuning.

RAIDPro Is Available In Two Models: RAIDPro VL and RAIDPro XL

RAIDPro is available in two pre-configured models. RAIDPro VL
provides exceptional value, and RAIDPro XL provides the highest
performance.
RAIDPro VL, available with 2.1 GB or 4.3 GB disk drive modules,
meets entry-level PC server application needs, providing high
resiliency and exceptional ease-of-use at a great value. RAIDPro VL
features a one-channel DGR SCSI-2 RAIDCard controller and 4 MB of
controller cache RAM, scalable to 16 MB.
RAIDPro XL, with 4.3 GB high-performance drives, offers more
flexibility and performance to satisfy a broader range of entry-level
and midrange PC server needs. RAIDPro XL features a two-channel DGR
Ultra RAIDCard controller and 16 MB of controller cache RAM,
upgradeable to 64 MB. Its UltraSCSI performance provides up to twice
the transfer speed of standard SCSI-2 solutions.
RAIDPro XL also includes a single server license for
VantagePoint(TM) storage management software. VantagePoint is
Storage Dimensions' industry-leading enterprise storage management
solution allowing network administrators to centrally monitor the
performance, condition, and configuration of all disk storage devices
attached to Windows NT and NetWare servers. RAIDPro is ideal for
multiple distributed storage systems located in nationwide, or
worldwide, branch sites. With VantagePoint, all RAIDPro systems can
be easily monitored from one central location via a single
workstation console.

RAIDPro Comes Standard With World-Class Warranty Coverage

RAIDPro is supported by Storage Dimensions' SpeedExchange(SM) advance exchange warranty. Under the generous terms of SpeedExchange, customers can receive replacement components within 24 hours of the request. The warranty coverage is for five years on disk drives and three years on all other components. RAIDPro comes with free on-site service for one year.

Pricing, Availability, and Specifications

RAIDPro VL will ship during the second quarter of this year. An entry-level RAIDPro VL system consisting of three 2.1 GB disk drives and 4 MB of controller cache starts at $4,475. RAIDPro XL is expected to ship within sixty days of the VL model. RAIDPro XL with three 4.3 GB disk drives, 16 MB of controller cache, and VantagePoint software will be priced at $7,830.

With a footprint that is 8.75" wide, 14" deep, and 5.25" high, RAIDPro can easily fit on top of most PC-LAN servers. Using two enclosures, RAIDPro provides scalable RAID 5 capacity from 4 to 43 GB.
