Stolen VA laptop recovered.

The stolen laptop computer that held personal data on more than 26.5 million veterans and active-duty. National Guard and reserve members has been recovered, Department of Veterans Affairs R. James Nicholson said June 29.

Forensic tests and other information from the investigation found that none of the information on the recovered computer equipment had been copied or compromised.

The Bush administration had requested $160.5 million to pay for credit monitoring for those affected by the theft. The administration later dropped the request because it was considered unlikely that the confidential information stolen in May would lead to cases of identify theft.
