Stocking Oddball And Obsolete Ammo Can Improve The Sale Of Used Guns

It is inevitable when you deal in used firearms This is an extensive list of small arms — pistol, machine gun, grenade launcher, anti-tank rifle — that includes variants.

cartridges that are not as readily available as more standard chamberings. There is probably no single thing that can be done to better improve the sales potential of such guns than by having good quality ammunition for them on hand.

Fortunately, we have never had it so good as in the present with regard to availability of a truly huge variety of chamberings. If the cartridge you need is not available from some source given in this column it is, indeed, an incredibly odd one.

The type of chamberings and ammunition I am talking about fall into a number of categories.

The first of these are U.S. cartridges for which guns are no longer manufactured. These can range from old long obsolete black powder black powder

numbers like the .38-55 to relatively modern cartridges that were commercial failures like the .225 Winchester. Fortunately, a great many of such chamberings are readily available from one of the major U.S. ammunition manufacturers. A partial list of some of the obsolete chamberings that are readily available includes: .218 Bee .22 Remington Jet .225 Winchester .25-20 .25-35 .256 Winchester Magnum Winchester Magnum refers to a "family" of cartridges developed by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company , one of the oldest firearms manufacturers in the United States, in the late 1950's and early 1960's, all based on the same basic cartridge case.  6.5mm Remington Magnum .284 Winchester .30 Remington .30-40 Krag .300 Savage .300 H&H .303 Savage .32 Winchester Special .32-20 .32 Short & Long Colt COLT. An animal of the horse species, whether male or female, not more than four years old. Russ. & Ry. 416.  .348 Winchester .350 Remington Magnum .351 Winchester .38-40 .38-55 .44-40

Any dealer should be able to get any of the above obsolete or obsolescent cartridges through normal U.S. ammunition distribution channels. I dare say that the average gunshop does not stock at least half of the cartridges on the above list in spite of their ready availability.

There are a great many other chamberings that may appear in your used gun racks for which it would be desirable to have ammunition. These fall into a number of broad categories including obsolete U.S. cartridges not previously mentioned, foreign military rifle cartridges List of rifle cartridges', by category, and then by name. Because this is a very extensive list categories have been added to make searching easier. Within each category, cartridges are organized by name and split into groups with names based on inches and names based on metric , and foreign pistol cartridges. The vast majority of these can be obtained in new commercial ammunition. Some are available as military surplus. Still others are available from specialty suppliers of new old stock ammunition and custom loaded ammunition.

One such company that has long been a supplier of otherwise unobtainable ammunition is Norma. Norma ammunition is distributed in the U.S. by the Federal Cartridge Federal Cartridge is a wholly owned subsidiary of ATK (Alliant Techsystems), located in Edina, Minnesota. With a work force of nearly 1,000 in Anoka, Minnesota, Federal manufactures a complete line of shotshell, centerfire, and rimfire ammunition and components.  Company. The extensive Norma line includes many odd foreign military and sporting cartridges as well as several obsolete U.S. cartridges. The quality of this ammo is superb. Federal has also taken Norma's lead and added a number of foreign military rifle cartridges to its American Eagle line. These all feature full metal jacket Noun 1. full metal jacket - a lead bullet that is covered with a jacket of a harder metal (usually copper)

bullets for target shooting, training, and practice. In addition, Federal has just added a couple of classic British big bore cartridges--the .416 Rigby and the .470 Nitro Express The Nitro Express series of cartridges are used in large-bore hunting rifles, also known as elephant guns or express rifles. They are named after the propellant they use, cordite, which is composed of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine. , to their line up. The combined Federal and Norma ammunition lines can fill many dealer needs for odd ammunition.

All are readily reloadable with Boxer primers. Both lines are carried nationwide by many major distributors.

This line includes a great many European sporting rifle chamberings that are unavailable from any other source. The quality of the ammunition is top notch and it is all loaded with U.S. type Boxer primers and is readily reloadable. RWS products are distributed nationwide by several major distributors; however, not all handle the entire RWS centerfire rifle cartridge line. The one distributor that does is Old Western Scrounger scrounge

Old Western Scrounger can supply the entire RWS centerfire rifle ammunition line as well as being the exclusive distributor of RWS bullets, brass, and primers (Berdan and Boxer). Odd-ball ammunition is the specialty of the house at Old Western Scrounger. They publish an extensive catalog catalog, descriptive list, on cards or in a book, of the contents of a library. Assurbanipal's library at Nineveh was cataloged on shelves of slate. The first known subject catalog was compiled by Callimachus at the Alexandrian Library in the 3d cent. B.C.  of new "old" stock ammunition, custom loaded ammunition, surplus ammunition, and components besides the new ammunition they stock and distribute. If I have trouble finding a certain type of ammunition I turn to the Old Western Scrounger. It is a one stop shopping source for all kinds of otherwise tough to find ammunition.

Fiocchi is also the single best source for odd sized shotgun ammunition. The line includes 12-, 16-, and 20-gauge loads in the 2-1/2" length for the old obsolete short chambered shotguns. In addition they even have 9mm rimfire shotshells and 32- and 24-gauge centerfire shotshells. The Fiocchi specialty ammunition line is not too extensively distributed as yet, so it is probably best to deal with them directly to fill your needs.

A number of U.S. importers have brought in substantial quantities of foreign military ammunition in varieties that have been heretofore extremely difficult to obtain. One of the leaders in this field has been Century International Arms. Century has large quantities of surplus 7.5x55mm French, 8mm Lebel, 8x56mm and others at extremely attractive prices. They have also contracted from various overseas sources several types of new commercial Boxer primed hunting ammunition in military calibers.

Another importer, the Hansen Cartridge Company, has done much the same thing in a wide range of military chamberings. Hansen is also the best source for the .50 Browning cartridge for use in the large rifles and machine guns it is chambered in.

The following tables give you a substantial listing of odd-ball and previously hard to find ammunition and their sources.

It is important to realize that quite often when you sell a used firearm firearm, device consisting essentially of a straight tube to propel shot, shell, or bullets by the explosion of gunpowder. Although the Chinese discovered gunpowder as early as the 9th cent., they did not develop firearms until the mid-14th cent.  in an odd chambering, you will have a repeat customer for the ammunition. While it is important to have the ammunition available to sell with the gun, it is also important to continue to stock it at least in small quantity to fulfill the same customer's future requirements.
