Still working his groove.

DJ Junior Vasquez Junior Vasquez, born Donald Mattern in 1949 (some sources say c. 1946) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is a famous New York City club DJ and remixer/producer. Career  talks about his hot new CD, his single life, and his fabulous 51st birthday

Judging from his new album, Twilo, Volume 1: Junior Vasquez, "kicking" is an understatement. The two-CD mix (on Virgin Records) of hard tribal house Tribal house is a form of electronic dance music derived from house music but being highly drum-centric and often without a core melody.

Born Donald Mattern in Philadelphia, Vasquez came out in New York during the disco era. "I didn't make a big statement," he claims. "I just ... breezed out." Like artist Keith Hating, a friend of his, he fell under the spell of the Paradise Garage The Paradise Garage is a notable club in the history of modern nightclub culture. It was owned by Michael Brody, its sole proprietor, and was located at 84 King Street, New York City. It operated from 1976 to 1987 and was the base for DJ Larry Levan. ; eventually he began forging his own career on the turntables.

In 1989 Vasquez began his six-year reign at the Sound Factory, the club that became synonymous with synonymous with

and need to be challenged," he observes of the hard-core fans willing to stick with him till Sunday afternoon. "That allows me to be experimental."

Vasquez expanded his empire throughout the '90s, recording singles like "Get Your Hands Off My Man" and lending his in-demand talents as a remixer and producer to Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Prince, and even roots rocker John Mellencamp John Mellencamp, also known as John Cougar and John Cougar Mellencamp, (born October 7, 1951) is best known for being an American rock singer-songwriter. But after Sound Factory closed in 1995, Vasquez seemed rudderless. His studio work sounded interchangeable, and he floated from one big club to another. In 1997 he returned to the Sound Factory space, reincarnated as Twilo, and reestablished his place among the world's preeminent party movers.

Through the highs and lows, from feuds with rival DJs to the rumors he was set to retire last New Year's Eve, Vasquez has kept gossips busy. "No matter how much you talk about me, you have to point to [the fact] that I do my job, and I've been doing it for a long time," he rebuts: "They can criticize my disposition all they want. Once they stop doing that, then I'm in trouble."

men, spending all that time in the booth isn't conducive to romance. He's been single since splitting with his last boyfriend in June 1999. "You give so much, your talent and love of music, for hours and hours, and then you crawl home Sunday and there's nobody to rub your feet," he says. "That really gets to me. So if anybody wants to send 8-by-10s, they can."
