Sticks, stones & bones: images from transient landscapes.In the early nineties I began to photograph in Eastern Europe Eastern Europe The countries of eastern Europe, especially those that were allied with the USSR in the Warsaw Pact, which was established in 1955 and dissolved in 1991. . I am fascinated by the atmosphere of suspended time caused by the isolation of the iron curtain Iron Curtain Political, military, and ideological barrier erected by the Soviet Union after World War II to seal off itself and its dependent eastern European allies from open contact with the West and other noncommunist areas. and the many changes that took place in the Czech Republic Czech Republic, Czech Česká Republika (2005 est. pop. 10,241,000), republic, 29,677 sq mi (78,864 sq km), central Europe. It is bordered by Slovakia on the east, Austria on the south, Germany on the west, and Poland on the north. after the Velvet Revolution in 1989. I witnessed a culture in transition and I found myself transformed by my experiences there. The changes effected both positive and negative results. I began photographing with a sense of nostalgia and regret for the things, both good and bad, that would disappear under the onslaught of change. All change is inevitable; things change or decay, are lost, and are swept away by death and/or evolution. Both are to be regretted and celebrated. I continue to photograph in Eastern Europe and also in the deep South of the United States. Although seemingly incongruous sites, I find similarities in their stubborn adherence to their respective cultural identities.
