STEVEDORING SERVICES OF AMERICA

Stevedoring Services of America (SSA (Serial Storage Architecture) A fault tolerant peripheral interface from IBM that transfers data at 80 and 160 Mbytes/sec. SSA uses SCSI commands, allowing existing software to drive SSA peripherals, which are typically disk drives. ) is one of the largest terminal operating and stevedoring companies in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. . Their operations span all of the U.S. West Coast and encompasses the entire South Atlantic Region.

As a full-service company, SSA performs many cargo handling functions. They operate more than a dozen shipping terminals for handling containerized con·tain·er·ize

1. To package (cargo) in large standardized containers for efficient shipping and handling.

 cargos and other commodities like import steel, meal, fruit, export forest products and agricultural goods. SSA also loads and unloads various types of commercial and military cargo vessels calling not only at SSA-operated terminals but at many other facilities.

SSA also operates two related subsidiaries; Pacific Rail Services and Crescent Warehouse. SSA's Pacific Rail Services is a third party operator of intermodal rail facilities, transferring containers between rail cars and chassis. SSA's Crescent Warehouse is one of California's largest operators of public marine warehouses which store cargo for future export or inland distribution.

Besides serving a huge population base, the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have emerged as major intermodal transportation centers.

Terminals operated by SSA include the Indies Terminal and Berth 146 at the Port of Los Angeles The Port of Los Angeles is located on San Pedro Bay in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles, approximately 20 miles (30 km) south of downtown. Also called Los Angeles Harbor and WORLDPORT LA , Pier F and the Pacific Container Terminal A container terminal is a facility where cargo containers are transhipped between different transport vehicles, for onward transportation. The transhipment may be between ships and land vehicles, for example trains or trucks, in which case the terminal is described as a  at the Port of Long Beach.
