The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  partnership agreement with Resonate, Inc., a leading provider of Internet Services Management (iSM) solutions. Under the terms of the agreement, Sterling Software will use Resonate's solutions to market and support two best-of-breed products that ensure high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue. , performance and control of e-business applications. Sterling Software will market the Resonate solutions as FUSION:Balance and FUSION:Director.

This strategic partnership strengthens Sterling Software's end-to-end e-business (E3) systems management strategy, which helps companies optimize uptime and performance for e-business environments.

Sterling Software's E3 systems management products -- including network, storage, and Web management -- deliver solutions for the entire enterprise, along with the expertise and discipline developed over 20 years of managing systems for the largest enterprises in the world. Sterling Software leverages Resonate's patented Internet services management technology as the basis for solutions that provide scalability and reliability to e-business applications. The FUSION solutions provide automated service level control for more predictable performance of critical e-business applications.

Why Is Web Management So Important?

Organizations implementing e-business initiatives may be taking a substantial risk, often putting critical business processes online for the first time. "For successful e-business deployments, continuous availability and high performance of all components in e-business applications and services must be a design goal from the outset rather than as an afterthought," says Richard Villars, vice president, Internet and eCommerce Strategies at IDC. "The Resonate partnership puts Sterling Software in a strong position to help its clients achieve their business objectives of increasing revenue, managing expenses, and strengthening channel relationships through e-business initiatives."

How Do Customers Benefit From Sterling Software's Web Management Offering?

"Forging this partnership with Resonate helps Sterling Software ensure that its powerful systems management solutions are `nimble enough for the net,'" said Russell Hawkins, president of Sterling Software's Web Management Division. "Customers can leverage the combined power of Sterling Software's leadership in enterprise systems management and Resonate's expertise in performance and availability solutions built specifically for Internet-based applications. As a result, they can optimize the availability and performance of their e-business applications across the enterprise."

How Do The FUSION Web Management Solutions Ensure High Availability and Maximum Performance?

As a result of the worldwide partnership, Sterling Software will market and support two powerful Web management solutions:

-- FUSION: Balance is a software solution for e-business enterprise
traffic management. Sterling Software will offer a single site
option, as well as a multi-site option for geographically
    distributed Internet sites.

-- FUSION: Balance guarantees the maximum uptime and the fastest
performance for e-business applications by balancing traffic
across an e-business infrastructure. Unlike most load balancing
products, FUSION:Balance uses Resonate's patented "TCP Connection
Hop" technology to manage traffic without incurring the overhead
of passing all data through a single distribution point.
FUSION:Balance makes request distribution decisions based on
different classes of service -- the type of transaction, user
types, and platform status to ensure that resources are always
available. Also, with the FUSION:Balance multi-site option, users
can ensure that requests can be satisfied even when a site is down
since it directs traffic to available servers in other geographic
locations, reducing the impact of many Denial of Service (DoS)
    attacks.

-- FUSION: Director integrates the key elements of Internet traffic
and systems management to enable monitoring, reporting, and
control of service levels across Internet sites. FUSION:Director
    works in conjunction with FUSION:Balance.

In February 2000, Sterling Software announced that Computer Associates International, Inc. is acquiring it. Both of these solutions are complementary to Computer Associates' Web management offerings.
