) today introduced SAMS:Lifeguard, Release 3.2, the world's fastest, most advanced tool for managing and protecting remote/mobile PC data.

Remote and mobile backup is critical because 50 percent of all corporate PCs purchased today are laptops -- and the data stored on these devices is at unusually high risk. According to according to

, theft, virus, or just being dropped and broken.

"Companies that aren't protecting remote data are running a considerable risk," said Steve Harriman, vice president of marketing for Sterling Software's Storage Management Division. "If a laptop is stolen before it's backed-up, you have to recreate the data it stored. Experts tell us it takes 19-42 days to recreate the kind of operational data a sales rep, for example, would have stored. The cost of rebuilding that data can be tens of thousands of dollars."

Sterling Software has recognized this risk and has already put SAMS:Lifeguard to work. The company is using SAMS:Lifeguard to protect front-line data for its 90 offices and thousands of employees worldwide.

"SAMS:Lifeguard has already proven its value. In minutes, we've recovered extremely critical files that otherwise would have been lost," Harriman said. "Because more and more data that is truly important to the organization resides on remote PCs, it's vital that this data be protected with the same rigor rigor /rig·or/ (rig´er) [L.] chill; rigidity.

as the data on servers or mainframes."

Unequaled Enterprise-Class Data Protection

SAMS:Lifeguard protects more laptop data worldwide than any other remote/mobile backup tool. The product combines a unique patent-pending block- and byte-level differencing process with unmatched ease of use, including automation, customization and distribution, to ensure that remote and mobile data is protected and easily recoverable with unprecedented speed and efficiency.

In fact, a SAMS:Lifeguard user may be able to recover lost data without connecting to the network at all. That's because, unlike other remote backup products, SAMS:Lifeguard keeps a compressed copy of changed data on the PC's hard drive until the user connects to the network. Then, the data is encrypted and transmitted to the host server. If it's necessary to recover prior to connection, the data is available in seconds.

A key advantage of SAMS:Lifeguard is its user transparency. The automated backup process requires no user action other than to connect to the network (e.g., to send/receive e-mail). Because this process is automatic and no special user action is required, critical corporate data is always protected.
