With an ever-changing business environment, Sterling anticipated the need to augment its existing product offerings with a managed VoIP service aimed at small and medium sized businesses. This new service allows customers to significantly cut costs, while taking advantage of numerous features unavailable in traditional telephone systems, such as allowing users to attach documents to voice messages or participate in virtual meetings using shared data.

"Juniper Networks security products have been crucial for our VoIP offering," said Bill Anderson, chief technology officer at Sterling Internet Solutions. "The Juniper Networks security appliances are so flexible and have amazing interoperability, capable of adapting to whatever networking challenges we are faced with. There was never any doubt as to which vendor we would select for our VoIP security solution -- it was always Juniper."

Installed at Sterling's main office in Portland, Oregon as an integral part of the security and connectivity of Sterling's managed VoIP network are multiple Juniper Networks NetScreen-204 appliances which offer up to 400 Mbps of firewall throughput and 200 Mbps of 3DES VPN throughput performance. The appliances provide a secure and assured firewall/VPN solution for Sterling's ISP network.

Sterling also relies on Juniper Networks NetScreen-5GTs, standardized in the Sterling VoIP offering, to secure voice access over its clients' remote networks. Unlike traditional firewall offerings that open a wide range of ports to facilitate VoIP communications, the Juniper NetScreen products dynamically open and close pinholes in the firewall to maintain a tight security policy, yet not break the call. In addition to advanced VoIP security, the NetScreen-5GT includes deep inspection firewall, embedded antivirus and Web filtering Blocking access to unwanted Internet content. Businesses can block content based on traffic type. For example, Web access might be allowed, but file transfers may not. Content can also be blocked by site, using lists of URLs cataloged by content that are updated frequently.  to provide a safe and reliable connection between customer sites and Sterling's state-of-the-art data center.

The Juniper Networks firewall/VPN solution allows Sterling to serve more than 1,000 corporate customers with the security and reliability required in VoIP applications. Sterling's decision to implement the Juniper Networks solution has been rewarded with a more productive and efficient business environment, while granting access to a wide variety of applications to help serve its clients' needs.
