Stepping out for Mr. Jazz: celebrating the Giordano Legacy.Few names are more synonymous with synonymous with adjective equivalent to, the same as, identical to, similar to, identified with, equal to, tantamount to, interchangeable with, one and the same as jazz dance than that of Gus Giordano, the passionate pioneer who has spent over 50 years showing America--and the rest of the world--what it means to build an art form from the ground up. To honor his contributions to the dance world and bring together those who have been touched by his work and spirit, the folks at the Giordano Dance Center have organized--what else?--a weekend-long jazz extravaganza. The event, "Celebration of a Legacy," will take place October 27-29 at the school's studio in Evanston, IL, and at the Harris Theater Harris Theater may refer to one of:

Giordano's company, which grew out of the school in 1962, was the first in the world to devote itself entirely to jazz dance. With it, he aimed to increase appreciation of jazz as a uniquely American style. Giordano's 1975 book, the Anthology of American Jazz Dance, traces the history and development of the form and codifies the technique that bears his name. "It's very soulful soul·ful adj. So what's the secret to his success? "He couldn't have done it without my mother," says Nan Giordano. In addition to raising four children, Peg Giordano ran the couple's school, managed the payroll, and booked the Giordano calendar. "She came to be known as 'the phone lady' and she loved it," her daughter laughs. Derryl Yeager, artistic director of Utah's Odyssey Dance Theatre, has been taking his company to the Jazz Congress for more consecutive years than nearly any other group, second only to Japan's dynamic Masashi Action Machine. To him, Giordano's mantra seems to be, "If everybody grows, everybody wins," a welcome change from the often cutthroat cut·throat n. 1. A murderer, especially one who cuts throats. 2.
