Stephen Petronio produces explosiveness by establishing a solid foundation from which to work--deep plies plies 1

; cross-braced, turned-out fourth positions; wound-up bodies that unfurl a vortex of energy. These fundamentals, seen in ballet and Cunningham technique among others, permit rapid lateral accelerations and breathtaking jumps and spins. For his company's 20th season, he presented a program of three milestone works, plus a new excerpt. Each was unique but contained technical constants.

Not surprisingly, the oldest work, MiddleSexGorge (1990), felt the most dated. Perhaps it was the corseted, thonged, or flower-pantalooned men, the opening scene's smoke-laced light cone, or the throbbing throb

1. To beat rapidly or violently, as the heart; pound.

2. To vibrate, pulsate, or sound with a steady pronounced rhythm:
drums of Wire's score. The varied groupings of pairs, trios, and sixes massing together and flying apart proved timeless, however.

Lareigne (1995), in which the dynamic Ashleigh Leite and Shila Tirabassi excelled, further developed the idea of controlling and releasing energy, with dancers chasseeing laterally, gobbling up space, their bodies tilted like scooting scooting

a form of behavior limited largely to dogs. Sliding along on the ground while sitting on the perineal area and with the hindlimbs extended forwards. Caused usually by irritation in the perineal area, chiefly anal sac irritation.
seahorses. Manolo's costumes--wispy white chiffon tops over bare legs--mirrored Petronio's choreographic penchant for pairing tradition with flash.

Petronio choreographed Prelude (2000) while recovering from an injury. In a strong counterpoint to his otherwise frenetic style, the eight dancers remained rooted in a line, straining apart and groping grope

1. To reach about uncertainly; feel one's way: groped for the telephone.

or leaning on one another. Evoking the emotional highs and lows of a family (or facsimile), Prelude seemed to reflect Petronio's vulnerability--until the dancers spat sprays of water straight overhead.

An excerpt of a work in process, bud, showed Petronio's sentimental side, described emphatically by Tara Subkoff's half-jacket costumes: One man completed the other. Thang Dao supported Gino Grenek, a willowy wil·low·y

yet sharp mover, and vice versa VICE VERSA. On the contrary; on opposite sides. . Rufus Wainwright's music, suddenly blossoming from solitary to symphonic, set an apt metaphor for a relationship's operatic potential.

The expressiveness in Petronio's earlier work could be measured by absolute standards--velocity and ground clearance--but he imbues his later choreography with an immeasurable dose of humanity. Kudos to Petronio for recognizing that his turbocharged style of choreography, practically imploding with physical invention and energy, is best appreciated in relatively brief quantities, like a super one-a-day vitamin.
