Step up your promotions to Canada. (Promotion).

Last issue we discussed some of the benefits and problems of promoting and fulfilling newsletter and specialized information subscription into Canada. We'd now like to add some observations of international mailing expert Al Goodloe, excerpted from his October 2002 Publisher's Multinational Direct newsletter.

* "Canada's 2002 GDP GDP (guanosine diphosphate): see guanine.  growth of 3.5 percent is better than that of the USA, and the forecast for 2003 of 3.7 also exceeds that of the USA."

* "Canada has been consistently good for the sale of US publications. With a population of around 27 million, Canada doesn't have a large enough population to amortize amortize

the variety of publications needed in a growing economy. Moreover, a portion of the country's publishing resources go into the French-language market. While most French-Canadians speak English, they guard their heritage and would insist upon adequate French-language coverage.

doesn't deter Canadians from buying US publications. Established publications selling at international prices do well. Test to make sure you are pricing correctly. High technology, computers, news, sports, entertainment, specialized business management are some of the categories in demand, said Tony Gilroy Tony Gilroy is a screenwriter most notable for writing the screenplays for the Jason Bourne series starring Matt Damon. * "Publishers have good things to say about the vibrancy of the market. Stacy Berver, managing director, Agora agora (ăg`ərə) [Gr.,=market], in ancient Greece, the public square or marketplace of a city. In early Greek history the agora was primarily used as a place for public assembly; later it functioned mainly as a center of commerce.  International, said Agora is so confident of the market that the company has decided to step up mailings from 600,000 to 1 million in 2003 for three of the firm's health newsletters. Printing of promotions is done in the USA, and packages are then trucked to the border and entered into the Canadian mail stream.

"The package for Health Science News Alert is a 6-page magalog, reduced from the US package size of 24 pages. Another cost-saving measure is a reduction in the dimensions of the magalog from 12 1/2 x 9" to 10 3/4 x 8 1/4".

"Prospects are offered a choice of quarterly billing of C$19.75 or money-saving single payments for one or two years. The offer is further enhanced with an opportunity to receive four free gifts, called an 'Advanced Healing Library.' A fifth gift can be added to the library if the propect responds within fifteen days.

* "Here are some tips for improving response in Canada.

"1. Offer Canadian dollars as a payment option. By doing so, you make it easier for Canadians to pay you. Many US firms have lock boxes in Canadian banks to receive and convert Canadian checks into US dollars.

"2. Test automatic renewals. The automatic renewal concept is catching on in Canada. The charge for the initial subscription is made to a credit card, with authorization to renew automatically to the card. The charge can be canceled if the subscriber notifies the publisher.

"3. Replies to a Canadian address generally lift response. As previously mentioned, the lock box arrangement solves both the reply address as well as the check conversion. But the lock box step can be omitted. The firm handling your Canadian replies can send orders and Canadian-dollar checks directly to you. These checks can be converted to US dollars at low fees by check clearing services."
