Step by step.QA I am 24 and have a terrible credit history, but I would like to achieve financial freedom in 10 years, I have several ideas, but no real plans on how to achieve them, I want to go back to college and get a degree in business, but I am ineligible for financial aid. I feel overwhelmed, but l know I can do it. Do you have any advice? --A. Mansfield Newark, New Jersey Yes, you can do it. But you do need to sit down and draw up a plan to accomplish your goals--all of them. Your letter stated three: repairing your credit to become financially independent (see "Creeping Credit Errors," this issue); getting your degree; and becoming an entrepreneur. Though it may seem like a lot to carry out, if you break it down, step by step, you'll be amazed at what you'll be able to accomplish. Trust me ... First, you'll need to prioritize. That is, decide which goal you want to achieve first. Then, you'll need to devise a written plan of action to help you work out the details. For each goal, your plan should include deadlines for each step, the resources you will need to accomplish each step, and a backup plan for each step. Remember that while your plan should be structured, it should be flexible in case anything unforeseen happens. With some diligence, you'll be able to look at your degree hanging on the wall behind your desk--when you feel like coming into the office! You will get there. Just let your plan be your guide. --R.D.C.
