Steeling victories: two winning schemes from Living Steel.


Living Steel, a worldwide programme to stimulate innovation in the design and construction of housing, recently awarded two prizes in an international design competition.  Architectenbureau Cepezed BV was selected as the winner alongside the scheme for Kolkata by London based architects Piercy Conner, both of which proposed modular kit solutions.

Kick Start, the winning scheme for Warsaw, proposed a lightweight replicable kit, that could be assembled in a variety of configurations to appeal to taste, affordability and required specification. Weighing just 2500kg, the units are capable of being stacked up to six levels, and can be easily delivered by road and assembled using small cranes.

Piercy Conner also adopted a modular prefabricated pre·fab·ri·cate

1. To manufacture (a building or section of a building, for example) in advance, especially in standard sections that can be easily shipped and
 approach in SymHouse Mk 1; extending their proven track record of innovative housing design, however, their proposal went one stage further with an ingenious spatial strategy. By proposing a conditioned inner core set within a peripheral layer of more responsive inside/outside spaces, this scheme satisfied not only the environmental aspirations of the brief, allowing both 'natures' to successfully co-exist, but also the social aspirations with a series of spaces that would link internal and external environments. Carl Perry, the chairman of the Living Steel Steering Group, has confirmed that it is intended that both schemes will be developed with the architects working with local supply chains.
