Steelcase to close plants & cut 600 jobs.


GRAND RAPIDS Grand Rapids, city (1990 pop. 189,126), seat of Kent co., SW central Mich., on the Grand River; inc. 1850. The second largest city in the state, it is a distribution, wholesale, and industrial center for an area that yields fruit, dairy products, farm produce, , MI -- Steelcase Inc. announced plans to close several manufacturing facilities in the Grand Rapids area over the next two years.

The release also says that "these actions are designed to reduce overhead related to excess capacity and to improve production efficiency. When this plan is fully implemented, annual pre-tax savings are expected to be in the range of $35 million to $45 million."
