Statistics Chart Industry's Growth.

BIFMA's statistical programs provide a benchmark for office furniture manufacturers.

* The value of U.S. office furniture shipments grew from $3.332 billion in 1980 to $12.240 billion in 1999, a fact that might not be known if not for the statistics-gathering arm of BIFMA BIFMA Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer's Association  International.

The collecting, reporting and analyzing of statistical data about the office furniture industry is one of the primary missions of BIFMA and one of the cornerstones of the association's establishment. The data captured in BIFMA's monthly surveys of its members provides a benchmark for office furniture companies to measure their individual company's performance against that of the whole industry.

The shipments survey also provides BIFMA with the base information needed to plug into an econometric model Econometric models are used by economists to find standard relationships among aspects of the macroeconomy and use those relationships to predict the effects of certain events (like government policies) on inflation, unemployment, growth, etc.  to project future shipments. The historical data amassed over the years combined with current and predicted economic trends has led BIFMA to project the value of U.S. office furniture shipments to reach a record of $13.340 billion and $14.000 billion, respectively, in 2000 and 2001.

Some of the other statistics captured by BIFMA include furniture shipments by product category (seating, desks, systems, etc.); U.S. office furniture imports and exports; and channels of office furniture distribution.

BIFMA's ongoing statistical analysis indicates that the overall wood and non-wood product mix remains relatively constant at approximately 25 percent wood product and 75 percent non-wood product.
