Statement by DC Air Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

Business Editors

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 15, 2000

Following is a statement by DC Air Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert L. Johnson Robert L. Johnson (born April 8, 1946) is an American businessman and the founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET), and was its chairman and chief executive officer. :

We are deeply disappointed that Sen. Schumer (D-NY) has chosen to oppose the creation of DC Air without being in full possession of the facts. DC Air will be a new entrant en·trant
n.
One that enters, especially one that enters a competition.

[French, from present participle of entrer, to enter, from Old French; see enter.
providing non-stop service from Washington, D.C. to the four cities in Upstate New York Upstate New York is the region of New York State north of the core of the New York metropolitan area. It has a population of 7,121,911 out of New York State's total 18,976,457. Were it an independent state, it would be ranked 13th by population.  -- Albany, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse -- with which Sen. Schumer is concerned, as well as 40 additional communities throughout the Eastern United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. . As a new entrant, DC Air will have low costs and has committed to maintaining service to these communities while providing high quality service at extremely competitive fares.

We are baffled by Sen. Schumer's inaccurate statements about DC Air. Contrary to the Senator's assertions, we will not inherit US Airways' high cost structure. Our costs will be significantly lower on the first day of our operations, and will decline going forward as we develop our operation. We will serve Upstate New York with a mix of full-sized and regional jets, not with all regional jets as the Senator implies. Our service will be at significantly lower costs due to the appropriate use of aicraft on the routes we will serve, and we will provide more than enough seats to meet demand in these routes.

If demand improves, as we expect, DC Air has the ability to add additional seats to serve our customers. Finally, the Senator's statement that the Justice Department should intervene to "break the new airline's monopoly" on routes between Washington, D.C. and Upstate New York is puzzling, as his proposed solution is to use his political influence to bestow be·stow
