More than 1,000 professionals from 124 engineering and construction management firms contributed to the project, ranging from engineers and architects to planners and technicians. Under terms of the Pacific Railroads Act, the Union Pacific was authorized to build a line westward from Omaha, Nebr. . In addition, more than 8,000 construction workers drew paychecks while working on the project. The Alameda Corridor resulted from a cooperative spirit to benefit the region, state and nation. For example, the ports regularly compete for customers, and they joined forces to launch the Alameda Corridor. Construction began in 1997 with substantial completion on time and on budget in April 2002. The scope of this accomplishment is demonstrated by the various project elements and materials listed here: * 51 separate bridge structures * 1,700 relocations of underground and overhead utility operations * Uninterrupted rail service during construction * 1 million cubic yards of concrete * 150 million pounds of rebar re·bar n. 1.
