In the United States each state is responsible for regulating the insurance business that is conducted by the insurers licensed to do business there. The insurance regulatory entities of most states are accredited by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The NAIC's mission is to assist state insurance regulators, individually and collectively, in serving the public interest and achieving fundamental insurance regulatory goals in a responsive, efficient and cost effective manner. However, it is up to each state to adopt, modify or reject the regulatory changes the NAIC proposes.
