State Sen. Tom Bakk Initiates Task Force on Island Lake Water Levels, Announces Minnesota Power.

Business & Energy Editors

DULUTH, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 27, 2003

Minnesota Power an ALLETE company (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
:ALE) announced n today that it is collaborating with state Sen. Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, in formation of a task force to address the issue of low water levels in the Island Lake Reservoir.

Bakk called for formation of such a group during a meeting Aug. 5 at the Gnesen Town Hall of concerned citizens, including those leasing land on the reservoir from Minnesota Power. Below-normal precipitation the past couple of years has meant that Island Lake has been drawn exceptionally low as Minnesota Power released enough water from the reservoir to maintain minimum water levels and flow rates downstream on the St. Louis River. Those levels and rates are set by state and federal regulations. Leaseholders, private landowners and others at the meeting asked that Minnesota Power reduce its draw-down on the reservoir when its level is especially low.

Bakk asked that, in addition to landowners, the task force include representatives of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is the agency of the state of Minnesota charged with maintaining natural areas such as state parks, state forests, recreational trails, and recreation areas as well as managing minerals, wildlife, and forestry. , St. Louis County St. Louis County is the name of multiple counties in the United States:
  • St. Louis County, Missouri
  • St. Louis County, Minnesota
and other interested agencies. Minnesota Power will assist in identifying and notifying possibly interested parties.

The group is expected to begin meeting this fall on revisions to the plan under which the Island Lake Reservoir is operated, staying within the parameters of the current federal license for the entire St. Louis River hydroelectric system, which covers other headwater head·wa·ter
