Starz Encore Distribution President Spaulding to Retire After 24-Year Career; Crafted Starz Encore Affiliation Agreements Covering >140 Million Pay TV Units, Played Central Role in Growth of Digital Programming.
Spaulding, 63, a veteran of almost 25 years in the cable and satellite programming industry, has been with Starz Encore since December 1990, prior to the launch of the company's first channel, Encore.
"Que has been the engine that moved us from a tiny startup with $10 million in revenue in our first year of operation to a company that last year earned nearly $1 billion in revenue from about 138 million subscriptions and 13 channels," said Starz Encore founder, chairman, and CEO John J. Sie. "All of us at Starz Encore are deeply grateful to Que for the contribution he made to our company and for his friendship over many years. We will miss him as a colleague, but he will remain our friend."
Spaulding began his career in the cable industry in 1979 as vice president of sales and affiliate marketing for Showtime Networks Inc., working for Showtime's then senior vice president, John Sie.
In the early 1980s Spaulding was named senior vice president of Rainbow Programming Services Inc., where he was responsible for the launch of Bravo, American Movie Classics, The Playboy Channel and a group of regional sports channels. He later served as president of the How-To Channel.
Sie and Spaulding were reunited in 1990 when Spaulding became one of the first employees hired for the nascent Encore network.
Spaulding was responsible for creating affiliation agreements with the major cable operating companies and the direct broadcast satellite services during the 1990s, as they made the transition from analog to digital transmissions.
"The development of digital caused us to rethink the entire proposition of premium television," Spaulding noted. "Digital made it possible to sell a lot more channels for much lower price than had been the case in the analog world."
Under Spaulding's leadership, Starz Encore pioneered the concept of offering consumers not just one or two premium networks, but a whole package of multiplexed "theme" networks, each of which offers a full slate of films in a particular genre round the clock. These include currently the Starz Super Pak for digital tiers, which offers 12 channels of first-run, uncut motion pictures -- and soon to be 13 with the December 2003 launch of STARZ! Kids.
"My time at Starz Encore has been the capstone to my career," Spaulding said. "I am proud of our accomplishments here and of the fact that Starz Encore maintains its position as the leading provider of premium television and as the most innovative pioneer in new services, such as subscription video-on-demand."
Spaulding graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and later earned an MBA in Marketing from Columbia Business School. He has been a frequent speaker at industry conferences over the years including the Western Show, the National Cable Show, and numerous Kagan seminars. He and his wife Pat live in Littleton, Colorado. They have two children, Scott, a senior at the University of Arizona, and Michelle, director of diversity recruitment at executive search firm Carlsen Resources.
