The charter was for 20 years. The Bank was created to handle the financial needs and requirements of the central government of the newly formed United States, which had from Congress in 1812 and growing it to a multimillion dollar institution, in what is currently known as the Ritz-Carlton. For years after its construction the building housed The Girard Company and its banking services, until 1983 when it was acquired by Mellon & Sons' Bank out of Pittsburgh. Mellon Bank utilized the space until 1991 when a fire consumed an adjacent office building rendering it unsuitable for occupancy.
