Stars of the White Nights. (Summer Calendar of Performances).
There are two reasons to celebrate at the 11th International Festival "Stars of the White Nights" this year: the 300th anniversary of the festivals host city, St. Petersburg, Russia, and the wealth of international ballet performances, held May 5-August 5. Themed programs at this year's festival, led by Artistic Director Valery Gergiev, include "Ballets by Shostakovich," "An Evening of Prokofiev," "Historic Ballets," and "Stravinsky Ballets." The Kirov Kirov (kē`rəf), formerly Vyatka (vyät`kə), city (1989 pop. 440,000), capital of Kirov region, central European Russia, on the Vyatka River. Ballet, London's Royal Ballet, and the Central Ballet of China are slated to perform, although the roster is subject to change. The Maryinsky Theatre is located at 1, Teatralnaya Square in St. Petersburg.
