Starbucks Launches Its First Philippines Coffee Blend, Kape Vinta Blend.

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 1998--Starbucks Coffee International and Rustan Coffee Corporation launched Starbucks first Philippines coffee blend, Kape Vinta Blend, at retail locations in the country last week. This unique and special blend is currently available only in the Philippines.

The delightful Kape Vinta Blend, with its subtle earthiness, intriguing complexity and lingering spiciness, features a bold combination of coffees from the Philippines and Indonesia. To capture the essence of shared passions for great coffee between Starbucks and the people of the Philippines, one of the country's most distinguished painters, Mr. Mauro Malang Santos, created the stamp for the coffee. Kape Vinta is Tagalog for "Coffee Boat."

"The Kape Vinta Blend artwork, a new and distinct Starbucks design, embraces the proud traditions and cultures of Filipinos. It is my gift to the Starbucks coffee experience," said Mr. Santos. "Starbucks conscious devotion to its people and coffee greatly inspired me in producing the artwork."

"Our success in launching the Kape Vinta Blend, the product of Starbucks innovative research and entrepreneurial spirit in producing great coffees, is an affirmation of Starbucks as the world's leading purveyor of specialty coffee," said Eduardo S. Lopez Jr., president of Rustan Coffee Corporation. "In every cup of Starbucks Kape Vinta Blend coffee, the splendor of our country's rich history and diverse heritage lives on."

"The Kape Vinta Blend celebrates the coming together of coffee and cultures. Its introduction is an integral part of our commitment to putting roots into countries where we do business because Starbucks is a global company with local values," said Howard Behar, president of Starbucks Coffee International. "The Kape Vinta Blend will greatly enhance the Starbucks brand, as we continue to expand throughout the Asia-Pacific region."

Manila-based Rustan Coffee Corporation is part of the Rustan Group of Companies, which has more than 45 years of experience in retail operations and is one of the largest integrated retailing groups in the Philippines.

Starbucks Coffee International is a wholly owned subsidiary of Starbucks Coffee Company (Nasdaq:SBUX). Starbucks is the leading retailer, roaster and brand of specialty coffee in North America. The Philippines represents Starbucks Coffee International's fourth Pacific Rim market. Starbucks Coffee International has opened retail locations in Japan, Hawaii, Singapore, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand.
