Staples Introduces Innovative Lock That Uses Letters Instead Of Numbers To Create Easy-To-Remember Word Combinations; WordLock(TM) Available at Staples Stores Nationwide Today.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- The traditional combination lock has undergone a makeover for this back-to-school season as letters replace numbers on WordLock(TM), an innovative combination lock that is now available at Staples (Nasdaq: SPLS) nationwide. WordLock ($5.99), a Staples exclusive product and winner of the 2004 Staples Invention Quest(TM) is unlike most locks that feature a number dial and instead has five letter tumblers For other meanings, see Tumbler.
Tumblers were proposed by Ted Nelson in "Literary Machines" as a means to address every bit ever written, or a particular span of bits in any text ever written.

A tumbler is a unique numerical address of an interesting artifact.
that rotate around a barrel to create word combinations.

"WordLock provides an easy solution to an every day challenge - trying to remember a random number combination among the scores of passwords in our lives," said Jevin Eagle, senior vice president of Staples Brands for Staples, Inc. "You no longer have to remember 32-19-26 for your combination - you can choose 'dance,' 'beach' or even someone's initials. WordLock is just one way Staples brings ease and innovation to life for our customers."

The WordLock is easy to handle and easy to use. Among its advantages:

--Five tumblers to create 100,000 possible letter combinations

--A hardened, wide shackle shackle

a bar 2.5 ft long with an iron loop at either end, used in restraint of large pigs. A chain is threaded through the loops and around the lower hindlimbs of the pig. When the chain is pulled the pig is stretched and is cast with the limbs held wide apart.
 for extra security

--Available in six bright colors: silver, black, orange, pink, red, and "blurple," a combination of blue and purple

--Ability to reset the combination easily at any time

--Rust-resistant for use outdoors or in high-humidity areas such as pool lockers

Staples expects the WordLock to become popular for school lockers, office and health club lockers, as well as storage boxes, gates and sheds. The product is now available at Staples' 1,200 U.S. retail stores, Staples.com and later this month at store locations in Canada. WordLock was selected from over 8,300 entries in last year's Staples Invention Quest(TM), a nationwide search for bright ideas that translate into products that make life easier.
